Chicago’s largest hotel, the 2,019-room Hyatt Regency Chicago is part of NFPA's hotel block for the conference & Expo. In April they announced the completion of a $168 million renovation which included an overhaul of all guest rooms in the hotel's East and West towers, meeting spaces and dining outlets. The new welcoming lobby features an art wall, new décor, and iPad check-in services.

Several renovation projects have been completed at hotels in NFPA's conference block while others are still underway. The Hilton Chicago completed phase one of a four-phase project in May of 2012. I was there in early December and saw first hand how beautifully the new contemporary features blend with the venerable fixtures of this grand dame property. Last month the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place announced phase two of a major expansion and renovation project. NFPA attendees staying at this hotel will enjoy refreshed guestrooms (including closets with doors instead of a curtain!) and will be able to take advantage of increased capacity in several hotel restaurants.
You will find a listing of hotels available in NFPA's conference block and can make your reservation online. Be sure to book early for the best selection.
Some MGM properties, including Mandalay Bay, THEhotel at Mandalay Bay, Luxor and Excalibur are experiencing trouble with their guest registration system. Guests are being checked in manually and this has caused significant delays. On Friday afternoon, delays were running between 1-3 hours. The resorts have added personnel to help accommodate guests and are working to get the system back online as soon as possible. MGM apologizes for the inconvenience and asks for your patience while they work through the computer problems.

Typically, I wouldn't mention the weather on our Conference blog, but this time I'll make an exception. Las Vegas is hot and its only going to get hotter. The five day weather forcast is predicting termpartures above 100 every day. Sure the Conference is completely air conditioned, but last night the temperature (outside) was still in the 90s at 9 p.m.! Needless to say pack your bags accordingly.
We're doing our part to be environmentally responsible. NFPA has begun implementing many green initiatives for the Conference & Expo including online handouts, requests for proposals, registration, and housing; distributing recyclable tote bags to attendees; reusing signs and using digital signage where possible; promoting the conference online; and offering a Green track of educational sessions at the conference. In addition, we will donate excess prepared food to a local farm for animals or have it composted via kitchen composting stations and then fed to the foliage.
Mandalay Bay's green initiatives include an onsite recycling center, conserving electricity by limiting HVAC activity to 12 hours prior to an event, e-billing; using china and glassware instead of plastic; motion-sensitive, water saving faucets in most restrooms; and more. Click here to see Mandalay Bay's Green brochure.
If you've not yet booked your hotel room for the NFPA Conference & Expo, now's an excellent time.
