Seminars and other Tough Decisions

 Chicago is all about making tough decisions. Who do you root for, the Cubs or White Sox? What's better, deep-dish or thin crust? And of course, which pre-conference or post-conference seminar should you register for at this year’s NFPA Conference & Expo.

This last choice isn’t easy, as you can choose from 18 different seminars. Six of them will only be held in Chicago at the C&E, so it will be your only chance to attend one of these great seminars. The six seminars are; NFPA 1 Fire Code, Fire & Explosion Investigations (NFPA 921), Disaster / Emergency Management and Business Continuity Programs (NFPA 1600), NEC for Photovoltaics, NFPA 101 Healthcare Update, 2000-2012, and Fire Protection Concepts and Analysis for Property Loss Prevention.

There are two post-conference seminars that are also only available at this Chicago event. Changes to NFPA 70: National Electrical Code, and Changes to NFPA 25, Inspection, Testing & Maintenance of Water-based Fire Protection Systems will take place on Friday, June 14. These two seminars, will update you on the relevant changes that were voted on during the association technical meeting the day before.

The NFPA registration area is located in the Mandalay Bay South Convention Center, Level 2, in the Mandalay Bay Foyer. A valid picture ID is required to pick up your conference materials. If you are attending a single day, you can only pick up your badge on that day.

You can still register on-site with a personal check or credit card. Unfortunately, we cannot accept purchase orders or cash for on-site registration.

Watch a live broadcast of the Opening General Session of the NFPA Conference & Expo in Las Vegas

For the very first time, anyone not able to be in attendance at this year’s NFPA Conference & Expo being held June 11-14 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas will be able to witness the general session as it happens right online. Beginning at 1:00 p.m. pacific standard time on Monday, June 11, NFPA will broadcast the Opening General Session live at http://nfpa.typepad.com/conference.

The event will open with welcoming remarks by the Chair, Thomas W. Jaeger, P.E., followed by the President’s Report by James M. Shannon and the Nominating Committee Report by Peter McMahon. In addition to sharing the latest industry information, several awards will be presented to honor special achievements. The awards include:

• the Industrial Fire Protection Section's Best Fire Prevention Week Program Award
• the 2012 Life Safety Educator of the Year Award
• the Fire Protection Research Foundation Medal
• the Standards Medal

To close the event, Gordie Brown, an impressionist, comedian and musician will provide special entertainment. This is an unprecedented, not-to-be-missed online event by NFPA and should be taken advantage of by everyone in the fire and life safety industry not able to join us at the 2012 NFPA Conference & Expo.

New members, first-time attendees, and technical committee members - consider NFPA Standards Forum

If you are attending the NFPA Conference & Expo for the first time, are a new member, or a technical committee member, consider attending session T38, NFPA Standards Forum, which will be held from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 12 in MB Ballroom L. Hear how NFPA is streamlining and simplifying the standards development process (re-engineering the codes and standards process), see the latest changes to the New Regulations Governing the Development of NFPA Standards and the features of the new electronic submission system. 

Many of NFPA’s sixteen member sections will be meeting in Las Vegas. NFPA Section meetings are a great place to get to know the people in your field and to talk about common challenges. Section membership is a free benefit of NFPA membership. If you haven’t joined a member section yet, stop by a section meeting and see what you’ve been missing. Section membership applications are available at the NFPA booth in the exhibit hall. NFPA member section meetings are open to all registered conference attendees. Please note that only section members have voting privileges during these meetings.
