One of my favorites is The Promised Land: The Great Black Migration and How It Changed America. It tells the story of how from 1940 to 1970 some 5 million African Americans migrated from the South to urban areas of the North. The book gives significant focus to urban Chicago, the people who made the journey, and the consequences of their decision. The Promised Land is a rich, historically significant story that resonates with contemporary audiences.
