CASE STUDY T54. Justification of a Natural Ventilation Smoke Control Design for a Complex Atrium - Stephen Hill and Steven Whitman, Rolf Jensen and Associates
This session details the development of a performance-based natural ventilation smoke control strategy for the Conference Center at King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Egress and fire modeling analyses were used to assist the design team in the validation of the smoke control system design, which employed natural ventilation and mechanically forced make-up air in lieu of mechanical exhaust. The design approach corresponds to that permitted by NFPA 92, Standard for Smoke Control Systems, for gravity smoke venting to slow the rate of smoke layer descent for a period that allows occupants to egress from the space. The session will focus on all steps of the performance-based process, from pre-design to submittal of the final recommendations.
CASE STUDY T74. Abu Dhabi International Airport Midfield Terminal Building (MTB) — Fire Safety Strategy - Bassem Khalil and Sami Al Naqbi, and Salem H. Salem, Ministry of Interior; Susan Lamont, ARUP; Samiha Al Nuaimi, Abu Dhabi Airports Company
This session will present the fire safety strategy for the MTB. This iconic building comprises multiple connecting floors under a mega roof structure of 50 m in height. It has a total floor area of 700,000 m2 over six levels. The MTB will host retail, restaurants, and airline facilities for a total capacity of 27 million passengers per year when opened and 40 million passengers per year at project completion. The presenters will describe the performance-based fire strategy, which addresses the connectivity between multiple floors, tall ceiling spaces, and extended travel distances. Evacuation plans and emergency response procedures will also be presented. Throughout the presentation, the importance of close collaboration among the designers, the fire engineer, the client, and the local authority in achieving a safe working building will be discussed.

T07. International Approaches to Performance-Based Design of the SFPE Case Study will summarize the design approaches taken by each country that participated in the fire protection and life safety design case study for SFPE.
W51. The Global Code Compliance Puzzle will address local acceptability of NFPA codes and standards, how each country’s codes are applied, how codes from different countries differ from those of NFPA, how codes are enforced, what different companies have done to comply with AHJs, positive output from past build-outs, and recommendations for NFPA.
